Medical marijuana is a plant-based medicine from the Cannabis sativa or Cannabis indica species with three major active compounds: THC, CBD, and CBN. Humans have grown and consumed the flowering tops of the cannabis plant (collectively known as “marijuana”) for thousands of years. The chemicals produced by the plant, most notably cannabidiol and THC have been shown to have numerous beneficial effects on a number of medical conditions. There are many people that do not respond well and/or have side effects to commonly prescribed medications for these conditions, where Cannabidiol/THC may provide an alternative treatment strategy.
Medical marijuana was legalized in Virginia in 2018. A person interested in legally obtaining medical marijuana must receive a written certification issued by a Virginia Licensed Provider. With over 30 years of experience, our physician and medical team is joining the health community in offering these medical certifications to Virginia residents who may be suffering from a broad range of medical conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does my medical insurance cover the certification visit?
A: Our clinic does not participate with insurance companies but we will supply you with a medical superbill for your insurance provider.
Why should I go to the VA Medical MJ Doc clinic for this certification?
Our doctor is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and has over 30 years of experience of diagnosing and treating medical conditions. Additionally, we focus on helping people with more natural treatments if they can be used instead of prescription medications with their inherent potential side effects.
Our customer service is unparalleled: we have real people answering our phones, offer same day appointments and do not keep people waiting past their appointment times.
What should I expect during my Certification Appointment?
Your consultation with the doctor will include a comprehensive evaluation of your medical history, an understanding of your symptoms, a physical examination and then recommendations as to whether CBD/THC treatment is right for you. You will then receive the necessary documentation to obtain your certification card. The doctor will be available 24/7 for any questions and will see you periodically to ensure that your symptoms are responding well to the treatment.
How much does it cost to get a Medical Marijuana Card?
You must first obtain a written certification from a Licensed Provider. The Medical Certification Appointment is $300 and you will receive the certification the same day. You must then register with the DOH and pay an additional $50 for your MMJ Card.
What is required for me to get a Medical Marijuana Card in Virginia?
You must receive a medical certification issued by a Virginia doctor licensed by the Virginia Board of Medicine. This will require an evaluation of your medical history, the reasons why you require medical marijuana and a physical exam to ensure the safe usage of medical marijuana. You must also show proof of legal residency to the DOH upon registration.
How is medical marijuana different than the CBD products I see advertised that I can buy over the counter?
CBD (Cannabidiol) is one of over 100 chemicals found in the cannabis plant (marijuana) plant. CBD has been found to help a number of conditions but it does not cause the “high” experienced with another chemical found in the cannabis plant, THC. Medical marijuana allows for the use of both CBD and THC in combination.
We are conveniently located in Northern Virginia and serve all legal Virginia residents.
